Atheist Anger Management

Hey atheists, why are you guys soooooooooooooooooooooooo pissed off at Christians?  You attribute their happiness to blissful ignorance, so why does it make you so mad?  You say their certitude is born of simplicity, so why do you care?  Does it really upset you when you walk past baby Jesus at Christmas time?  Does that Ten Commandments Monument on the courthouse lawn really threaten your life, liberty, or your secular pursuit of happiness?  Please.  While you were once discriminated against because of your belief in nothing, such is not the case now, and your anger toward Christians and your dismantling of Christianity in our public square is inexcusable.  I would say unforgivable but many of the people you victimize have undoubtedly already forgiven you.  And as you have been unable or unwilling to forgive them for past grievances, I’m guessing that pisses you off too.

Today’s militant atheist is an angry animal.  More angry than one could attribute to to the heavy burden of bearing the exclusive knowledge that God is impossible.  Look, I’ve been wanting to believe in God for about 40 years now, but the fact that I could never get there doesn’t make me pissed at the people who did.  I want to believe in aliens too, but until they show themselves, I’m agnostic on the subject.  I’m not angry at the abductees!  Agnostics are pragmatists, or at least realists in that we don’t spend too much time on esoteric arguments that can’t be won.  For example, if there is no way to prove a hypothesis (God), why split up into gangs and fight about it?  It’s counterproductive, time-consuming, expensive, and lethal.  And moot!

Christianity has largely figured this out as well, as it has outgrown its bloodsport past and evolved again and again to coexist in a changing world full of different faiths.  Christianity no longer seeks to demonize, minimize, or atomize other faiths.  Nor does it attack atheism for its irrational faith in nothing.  So why do atheists not afford Christians the same courtesy?  Why do they instead intimidate school boards and sue in courts to remove “under God” from our Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge of Allegiance from our schools?  Why do they intimidate city councils into banning Christmas trees and nativity scenes?  And why do they mock Christian beliefs and try to destroy their most sacred institutions?

For example, Christianity has considered marriage to be a sacrament or covenant between a man and a woman for more than 800 years.  Two years ago that sacrament was shredded by the Supreme Court, in spite of the fact that same-sex couples could have been granted every advantage that marriage brings, through civil unions.  From tax and inheritance laws to end-of-life decisions, civil unions could have been made to equal marriage in every way imaginable…except for the stamp of approval from a God who teaches that homosexuality is a sin.  Really?  You couldn’t let them keep marriage?  Slippery slopes are real and now there is no justifiable legal barrier between the current legal definition of marriage and whatever anyone decides it should be at any time in the future.   In Vancouver brides are marrying themselves.  It’s all the rage.  And it has nothing to do with Christianity and everything to do with the destruction of Christianity.

As an agnostic, I can appreciate the historical contributions of both Christianity and atheism.  And I can denounce their shortcomings with a modicum of objectivity.  But the irrational behavior of today’s militant atheist can only be explained in terms of blind partisan arrogance.  Those who believe in God by any name do so on faith alone, a fact used by atheists as justification for their marginalization and ridicule of Christianity.  Yet the fact that atheists must enlist this same blind faith in their steadfast belief that no such God exists, goes largely unobserved by a malignant media openly hostile to Christianity.  At least the true believer can make the very compelling argument that the beauty and genius of the universe indicate intelligent design, while the atheist can only argue that in a big bang, nothing became something.  The atheist must ignore the origin of the space from which it banged or the space into which it banged.  The atheist simply knows there was no creator, and anyone who believes otherwise is stupid and deserving of scorn.  Christianity = Blind Faith + Humility.  Atheism = Blind Faith + Arrogance.

Having faith in something you can’t see or touch or prove does not make you crazy or fringe.  It makes you human.  We all need to believe in something whether it’s God, Gaia, Big Government, or Big Bangs.  I believe in the Constitution of the United States of America which tells me that We The People are the rulers of this nation.  Republicans and Democrats alike who have forgotten that fact will be reminded soon when they must contend with our new party.  But first we’ve got to build it.  Wake up and pick a side, atheists.  You’re welcome in our party and we’d love your input when we go about the business of changing the world.  But you have to leave the loony at the door.
